The correct answer is

A self-selected sample

In a self-selected (voluntary response) sample, the respondents decide for themselves whether to take part. A magazine printing a survey and asking readers to mail it back is the textbook example – only those who choose to respond end up in the sample.

Such samples are non-probability samples and are usually biased, since people with strong opinions or more interest are more likely to reply, so the 1000+ responses cannot be generalised to all readers.

A cluster sample randomly selects whole groups, a stratified sample draws randomly from defined subgroups, and a simple random sample gives every member an equal chance of selection – in all three the researcher, not the respondent, controls selection.

Hence, the answer is A self-selected sample.
