A 3-phase, 4-wire system is a common electrical distribution setup. It consists of three phase conductors and one neutral conductor.
Power Distribution Stages
- Primary Transmission: Transmits power at very high voltages over long distances from generating stations. Typically uses 3-phase, 3-wire systems.
- Secondary Transmission: Steps down voltage for shorter distances within regions. Usually 3-phase, 3-wire.

Why 3-Phase 4-Wire for Secondary Distribution?
This system allows for flexibility in supplying power:
- 3-Phase Loads: Large motors and industrial equipment can be directly connected to the three phase lines.
- Single-Phase Loads: Residential and commercial buildings requiring standard single-phase power can draw power between any one phase conductor and the neutral conductor. This provides both higher voltage (line-to-neutral) and lower voltage (phase-to-neutral) options, commonly referred to as split-phase in some contexts.
