3 litres of pure petrol is added to 13 litres of a mixture of petrol and ethanol containing 40% petrol. Find the percentage of ethanol in the resulting mixture.

Initial Mixture Composition

The initial mixture has a total volume of 13 litres.

  • Percentage of petrol in the initial mixture = 40%
  • Percentage of ethanol in the initial mixture = $100\% - 40\% = 60\%$

Calculate the initial volumes:

  • Initial volume of petrol = $40\%$ of 13 L = $0.40 \times 13$ L = 5.2 L
  • Initial volume of ethanol = $60\%$ of 13 L = $0.60 \times 13$ L = 7.8 L

Adding Pure Petrol

3 litres of pure petrol are added to the mixture.

  • Volume of petrol added = 3 L

Resulting Mixture Composition

Calculate the new volumes after adding petrol:

  • New volume of petrol = Initial petrol + Added petrol = $5.2$ L + 3 L = 8.2 L
  • New volume of ethanol = Initial ethanol = 7.8 L (Ethanol volume remains unchanged)
  • Total volume of the resulting mixture = Initial mixture volume + Added petrol volume = 13 L + 3 L = 16 L

Final Ethanol Percentage Calculation

Calculate the percentage of ethanol in the resulting mixture:

Percentage of ethanol = $\frac{\text{Volume of ethanol}}{\text{Total volume of mixture}} \times 100\%$

Percentage of ethanol = $\frac{7.8 \text{ L}}{16 \text{ L}} \times 100\%$

Percentage of ethanol = $0.4875 \times 100\% = 48.75\%$
