Scoring Strategy to Attempt 100 Questions in 120 Minutes

Attempting 85 questions with 80% accuracy outscores attempting all 100 with 65% accuracy the −1/3 penalty makes the difference. Never spend more than 90 seconds on any question in the first pass. A blank costs zero; a wrong answer costs 1.33 marks in real terms once opportunity cost is factored in.

MBA Recommended Attempt Order

Order Section Time Allocation Strategy
1st English Usage 15–18 mins Fastest section grammar and vocabulary questions average 30 to 40 seconds each
2nd Reading Comprehension & Verbal Ability 25 mins Attempt verbal questions first, RC passages second; skip dense passages and return
3rd Analysis of Business Situations 25 mins Read without rushing the answer is almost always embedded in the passage
4th Data Sufficiency 20 mins Stop at sufficiency, not solution; overthinking these wastes the most time
5th Quantitative Aptitude 35 mins Start with ratios, percentages, averages; skip anything needing more than two steps

MCA Recommended Attempt Order

Order Section Strategy
1st Computer Awareness Most factual section; recall is fastest here
2nd Logical Reasoning Moderate time requirement; builds momentum
3rd Quantitative Ability Attempt calculation light questions first
4th Analytical Ability Highest time risk puzzle questions can stall you; leave last

Mistakes Candidates Made in TANCET 2022

Every TANCET cycle produces the same avoidable errors. Here are the ones that cost candidates marks in 2022.

Guessing without elimination:

With a −1/3 penalty, random guessing on uncertain questions produces an expected score of zero but adds negative variance. Only attempt a question if you can eliminate at least one option that alone shifts the odds in your favour.

Multiple shading on OMR sheets:

Anna University's scanner treats any double-shaded response as a wrong answer, attracting the full −1/3 deduction. Mark lightly until certain, shade firmly when you commit, and carry a spare black ballpoint pen.

Treating all five sections equally:

TANCET has no sectional minimums. Candidates who chased a balanced attempt often ended up mediocre across the board. Identify your two weakest sections, attempt only the questions you are confident about there, and redirect that time to your stronger areas.

Skipping Business Situations Analysis in prep:

This section has no equivalent in CAT or XAT. Candidates who relied on national exam material walked in underprepared for its case-based format. At minimum, practise two to three years of past TANCET papers specifically for this section.

Missing the scorecard download window:

The portal stays open for a fixed period only. Candidates who missed it had to apply for a duplicate via Demand Draft, a delay that disrupted counselling timelines. Download on day one and keep both a digital copy and a printout.

How Reservation Affects TANCET Cut-offs

TANCET cut-offs are not published as a single number. They vary by college, course, and reservation category. Understanding how this works saves candidates from either missing out on a strong college or over targeting one that was never within reach.

Tamil Nadu follows a detailed reservation matrix. Seats in government and government aided colleges are split across the following categories: OC (Open/General), BC (Backward Class), BCM (Backward Class Muslim), MBC/DNC (Most Backward Class/Denotified Communities), SC (Scheduled Caste), SCA (Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar), and ST (Scheduled Tribe).

Each category has its own last rank from the previous session. The OC last rank is always the most competitive. Reserved category candidates typically need 10 to 25 marks less than OC candidates for the same college and course, depending on the institution's seat matrix and the applicant pool in that year.

Indicative Category-wise Score Benchmarks

Category Score Range for Top-Tier Colleges Score Range for Mid-Tier Colleges
OC (General) 65 - 100 40 - 64
BC 55 - 75 32 - 54
BCM 50 - 70 28 - 49
MBC/DNC 48 - 68 25 - 47
SC/SCA 30 - 50 18 - 29
ST 25 - 45 15 - 25

Note: Reservation benefits under these categories apply only to candidates with Tamil Nadu domicile. Candidates from other states who appear for TANCET are considered under the OC category regardless of caste or community, and compete against the general pool for open seats only.

For MCA, cut-offs broadly follow the same category structure but typically run 5 to 10 marks lower than the MBA equivalents for the same college, reflecting the slightly different applicant environment.

TANCET 2022 Question Paper FAQs

Ques: What is the best order to attempt sections in the TANCET MBA paper?

Ans: The recommended approach is to start with English Usage since it is the fastest and most straightforward section, then move to Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability, followed by Analysis of Business Situations and Data Sufficiency, and leave Quantitative Aptitude for last with roughly 35 minutes remaining. There are no sectional time limits in TANCET, so you can move between sections freely. The key is to never spend more than 90 seconds on a single question in the first pass, mark uncertain questions and return if time permits.

Ques: What happens if I miss the TANCET scorecard download window?

Ans: The TANCET scorecard is available for download from the official portal for a fixed period after the result. If you miss this window, you cannot access it online anymore. To obtain a duplicate, you must submit a written request along with a Demand Draft of ₹500 payable to the Secretary (TANCET), Anna University, Chennai. Given that the scorecard is mandatory for every step of counselling, it is strongly advisable to download it on the day it becomes available and save both a digital copy and a physical printout.

Ques: Is TANCET harder than CMAT, and should I attempt both?

Ans: Both TANCET and CMAT are moderate difficulty exams with significant syllabus overlap. TANCET has a unique Business Situations Analysis section not present in CMAT, and CMAT carries a steeper negative marking penalty of one mark per wrong answer compared to TANCET's one-third. If you are targeting Tamil Nadu colleges, TANCET is the primary exam, those institutions do not use CMAT scores.
