Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith at Varanasi was founded by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta in February 1921, during the Non-Cooperation Movement, as a national institution independent of British control and British funding.
Shiv Prasad Gupta was a wealthy nationalist of Varanasi who also founded the newspaper Aaj and built Bharat Mata Mandir. He donated the land and the money for the Vidyapith, and Bhagwan Das became its first head, with the object of educating students outside the colonial system.
