The correct answer is

Bhanu Athaiya

The Academy Awards (Oscars) are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the United States for achievements in cinema.

Bhanu Athaiya became the first Indian to win an Oscar when she shared the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Richard Attenborough’s film ‘Gandhi’ at the ceremony held in 1983.

A.R. Rahman, Resul Pookutty and Gulzar all won their Oscars much later, in 2009, for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ (Rahman for original score and song, Pookutty for sound mixing, Gulzar for the lyrics of ‘Jai Ho’), so none of them was the first. Satyajit Ray received an Honorary Award only in 1992.

Bhanu Athaiya option is correct.
