First Map of India Creator

The creation of the first systematic maps of India is credited to James Rennell.

James Rennell was appointed as the first Surveyor General of Bengal by the East India Company in 1764. He undertook the monumental task of surveying and mapping the Indian subcontinent during the late 18th century.

His work resulted in the first detailed and scientifically produced maps of India, significantly advancing geographical knowledge of the region during that era.
