Aristotle's View on State Priority
Aristotle argued that the state is prior to the family and the individual in terms of nature, but latter in terms of time.
- Order of Nature: The state, as the 'whole', is logically and essentially prior to the 'parts' (family and individual). The state enables individuals to achieve their full potential and live a complete life. Humans are naturally inclined to live in a state (zoon politikon).
- Order of Time: Historically or chronologically, families and individuals likely came into existence before the organized structure of the state.
In essence, Aristotle believed the state is fundamental and necessary for the flourishing of its members, even if it formed later in history.
