A Foehn-type wind forms when moist air is forced up the windward slope of a mountain, loses its moisture as rain or snow on the way up, and then descends the leeward slope. Descending air is compressed, so it warms rapidly and arrives dry and hot at the foot of the range.
On the leeward, eastern side of the Rocky Mountains this wind is called the Chinook. It is famous for melting snow so quickly on the prairies of Alberta and Montana that it is nicknamed the snow-eater, which helps expose winter pasture for livestock.
