The correct answer is
Lactate

Muscle Contraction Without Oxygen: Acid Formation

When muscles contract intensely, especially when the oxygen supply is limited (anaerobic conditions), they rely on anaerobic respiration to produce energy.

Anaerobic Respiration Process

  • Normally, cellular respiration uses oxygen to break down glucose completely, producing ATP, carbon dioxide, and water.
  • During strenuous activity or oxygen deprivation, muscles first break down glucose into pyruvate through glycolysis. This yields a small amount of ATP.
  • In the absence of oxygen, pyruvate cannot enter the normal aerobic respiration pathway.
  • Instead, pyruvate is converted into Lactate (lactic acid). This process regenerates NAD+, which is essential for glycolysis to continue producing ATP.

Resulting Acid

The acid formed during this anaerobic process in muscles is lactic acid, which dissociates into lactate and hydrogen ions. Therefore, Lactate is the primary product.
