Which state became the first state in Independent India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in 2025 ?
Uttarakhand
Article 44 of the Constitution, a Directive Principle, asks the State to endeavour to secure a Uniform Civil Code for citizens throughout India, so that marriage, divorce, inheritance and similar matters follow common rules.
Uttarakhand passed the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand Act in February 2024 and brought it into force on 27 January 2025, becoming the first State after Independence to implement a UCC. Goa has had a common civil code since Portuguese rule, but that law predates its merger with India and was not enacted by an Indian State.
Gujarat set up a committee in 2025 to draft a UCC but had not implemented one in 2025, and Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh had not enacted such a law. Since one listed State fits, “None of the above” is ruled out.
Uttarakhand option is correct.
