Rusa Manjhi was a woman Panchayat worker of the Lahiripur Gram Panchayat in the Sunderbans of West Bengal. She showcased the success of women power in rural development in the 1980s. This lead to the participation of women, especially the neo-literate and illiterate women, in entrepreneurial programmes. Change was also apparent in the growth of social awareness about women's rights. Women came forward to fight their own battles regarding wife-beating, dowry, dessertion and bigamy. Often husbands did not agree with wives becoming self-sufficient. However, the women did not give up on their dream of self-empowerment.
