Identifying Non-Aeolian Landforms
Aeolian landforms are geological features created by the action of wind.
Landform Analysis
- Yardang: These are elongated, wind-swept ridges found in arid regions, formed by wind erosion. They are aeolian landforms.
- Barchan: These are crescent-shaped sand dunes that form and move due to wind deposition. They are aeolian landforms.
- Zeugen: These are isolated hills with a hard caprock protecting softer underlying rock from wind erosion, creating a pedestal or mushroom shape. They are aeolian landforms.
- Esker: This is a long, winding ridge of stratified sand and gravel deposited by a meltwater stream flowing within, under, or upon a glacier. Eskers are primarily glacial or fluvial features, not aeolian.
Conclusion
Based on the formation processes, Yardang, Barchan, and Zeugen are all created by wind (aeolian processes). An Esker, however, is formed by glacial meltwater.
Therefore, the Esker is not an aeolian landform.
