Social System Needs Explained

Sociological theories often describe the essential functional prerequisites or basic needs that every social system must fulfill to survive and function effectively. These are sometimes referred to as functional imperatives.

Functional Imperatives Overview

A widely recognized framework is Talcott Parsons' AGIL model, which identifies four key functional needs:

• Adaptation: The system's ability to adjust to and cope with its external environment.
• Goal Attainment: The system's capacity to define and achieve its primary objectives.
• Integration: The process of maintaining internal solidarity and coordinating the system's various parts.
• Latency (Pattern Maintenance): The need to manage strains and patterns of culture, ensuring motivation and the continuity of the system's values.

Analyzing the Options

Based on the functional prerequisites theory:

• Adaptation is a core need.
• Integration is a core need.
• Goal Attainment is a core need.
• Democracy represents a specific political structure or form of governance. While democracy can contribute to adaptation, integration, and goal attainment in certain societies, it is not a universal, fundamental prerequisite for *every* social system. Many social systems throughout history and across the globe have functioned without being democratic.

Therefore, Democracy is not considered a basic need shared by all social systems in the same way as adaptation, integration, and goal attainment.
