Which of the following is correct meaning of 'Blocking' in Randomized block design?

This question was previously asked in
MH SET 2025 Paper 2 Sociology Question Paper (15-Jun-2025)
The correct answer is

Participants with similar characteristics are grouped

In a randomized block design, blocking is the procedure of arranging participants into homogeneous subgroups called blocks, where members within a block share a characteristic likely to affect the dependent variable, such as age, sex or ability level.

Treatments are then randomly assigned within each block. This controls for the blocking variable, reduces within-group variability and increases the sensitivity of the design. Removing similar participants, grouping dissimilar ones, or literally blocking random errors do not describe this technique.

Hence, blocking means participants with similar characteristics are grouped.
