Which new Indian antibiotic has been developed to treat drug-resistant respiratory tract infections ?

UPSSSC Lower PCS 2026 Question Paper (23-Aug-2026)
The correct answer is

Nafithromycin

Nafithromycin is the new antibiotic developed in India for drug-resistant respiratory tract infections. It was produced by Wockhardt with support from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council and marketed as Miqnaf.

It belongs to the lactone ketolide class and acts on the bacterial ribosome, which allows it to work against strains of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia that no longer respond to older macrolides such as azithromycin. A short three-day course is enough, which also helps patients complete treatment.

The other names are not new Indian antibiotics for this purpose. Favipiravir and Remdesivir are antiviral drugs, not antibacterials, and azithromycin is precisely the older macrolide to which resistance had been rising.

Hence, the answer is Nafithromycin.
