BRICS began as a grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. At the 2023 Johannesburg summit it invited new members, and Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia were counted with the bloc from 1 January 2024.
On 6 January 2025, Brazil, which held the BRICS presidency for 2025, announced that Indonesia had been admitted as a full member. Counting the original five, the 2024 entrants and Saudi Arabia, Indonesia became the 11th full member of the group, the first expansion under the Brazilian presidency.
Argentina had been invited in 2023 but its new government declined to join in December 2023. Malaysia was made a BRICS partner country in 2025, not a full member, and Singapore has not sought BRICS membership.
