Which component of a solar panel is responsible for directly generating electric current when exposed to sunlight ?
Semiconductor material
A solar panel converts sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect, which takes place in its solar cells. These cells are made of semiconductor material, most commonly crystalline silicon doped to form a p–n junction.
When photons strike the semiconductor, they free electrons and create electron–hole pairs; the built-in electric field at the p–n junction separates these charges and drives them through an external circuit as a direct current. The semiconductor is therefore the component that directly generates the current.
The inverter only converts the direct current produced by the panel into alternating current for household use. Reflectors merely concentrate or redirect light onto the cells. Batteries store the energy that has already been generated for later use. None of these produces electric current from sunlight on its own.
Semiconductor material option is correct.
