What does the term “ecotone” refer to ?

This question was previously asked in
UPSSSC Lower PCS 2026 Question Paper (23-Aug-2026)
The correct answer is

A transitional zone between two adjacent ecosystems

An ecotone is the transition belt where two adjacent ecosystems meet and blend, such as the mangrove strip between land and sea, an estuary between river and ocean, or the grassland fringe between forest and desert.

Because species from both neighbouring communities overlap there, an ecotone often supports greater density and diversity than either community alone. This concentration of life is called the edge effect, and species largely confined to that belt are called edge species.

The other descriptions name different ideas. A region into which one ecosystem extends is ecological invasion or ecotypic spread; an area dominated by a single community is a biome or a community-dominated stand; and a zone of relatively stable conditions describes a climax community, not a transition belt.

Hence, the answer is a transitional zone between two adjacent ecosystems.
