Question

Consider the following statements:

I. A 30% solution of hydrogen peroxide is marketed as '10 volume' H2O2.

II. In the compound copper sulphate pentahydrate, all the five water molecules are hydrogen bonded.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

This question was previously asked in
NDA 2 2026 GAT Question Paper (13-Sep-2026)
The correct answer is

Neither I nor II

Statement I is incorrect: a solution containing about 30% H2O2 by mass corresponds to roughly '100 volume' hydrogen peroxide, since 1 mL of it liberates about 100 mL of oxygen gas at STP on decomposition, whereas a '10 volume' solution is a much weaker strength of roughly 3% H2O2. Statement II is incorrect: in copper sulphate pentahydrate, CuSO4·5H2O, only four of the five water molecules are directly linked to the central Cu2+ ion through coordinate bonds, while the fifth water molecule alone is held by hydrogen bonding to the sulphate ion; so it is not true that all five water molecules are hydrogen bonded. Hence, neither statement I nor statement II is correct.
