Mechanism of Toxicity

Upon contact with water or moisture (present in the air, stomach, or gastrointestinal tract), aluminium phosphide undergoes hydrolysis, releasing phosphine gas ($PH_3$).

The chemical reaction is:

Al P + 3 H₂O → Al(OH)₃ + PH₃

Phosphine ($PH_3$) is a highly toxic, flammable gas. It interferes with cellular respiration and mitochondrial function, leading to severe systemic toxicity affecting multiple organs, particularly the heart, liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.
