The term ``DOI'' stands for ............. in academic writing and referencing.
Digital object identifier
DOI expands to Digital Object Identifier. It is a permanent alphanumeric string assigned to a piece of scholarly content — an article, a chapter, a dataset — that identifies that item uniquely and for good.
Its value in referencing is persistence. A journal may move to a new publisher and every URL on its site may break, but the DOI stays attached to the work; the registration agency simply updates the address the DOI resolves to. A citation carrying a DOI therefore keeps working long after a bare web link has died, which is why major style manuals such as APA now require the DOI in a reference wherever one exists.
A DOI has two parts separated by a slash — a prefix identifying the registrant and a suffix identifying the item, as in 10.1000/xyz123 — and it is resolved by prefixing https://doi.org/ to the string.
Document of interest, Directory of information and Database of integration are not standard terms in academic publishing; none of them names a persistent identifier system.
Hence DOI stands for Digital Object Identifier.
