Question

The standard deviation of \(X\) is 4 and the standard deviation of \(Y\) is 5. If the correlation coefficient \(r\) is 0.8, then what is the regression coefficient of \(Y\) on \(X\)?

This question was previously asked in
NDA 2 2026 GAT Question Paper (13-Sep-2026)
The correct answer is

1

The regression coefficient of \(Y\) on \(X\) is \(b_{yx}=r\frac{\sigma_y}{\sigma_x}\). Substituting \(r=0.8\), \(\sigma_y=5\) and \(\sigma_x=4\) gives \(b_{yx}=0.8\times\frac{5}{4}=1\).
