UN Charter Principle of Self-Determination

The principle of self-determination allows people to freely determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development. This fundamental principle is a cornerstone of the United Nations.

Incorporation in UN Charter Articles

The United Nations Charter explicitly enshrines the principle of self-determination in several key articles:

• Article 1(2): This article states one of the UN's purposes is "To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples..."
• Article 55: This article promotes "universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion," and further states that the UN shall promote "conditions of stability and well-being which are necessary for peaceful and friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples."
• Article 56: This article obliges all members "to take joint and separate action in co-operation with the Organisation in the performance of the acts provided for in Chapter IX" (which includes Article 55).

Therefore, the principle of self-determination is clearly established within the foundational documents of the UN through these articles.
