Question

The ages of Misha and Kamal are in the ratio of 4 : 3 respectively. After 9 years the ratio of their ages will be 7 : 6. What is the difference in their present ages?

The correct answer is

3

Let the present ages of Misha and Kamal be 4x and 3x respectively. After 9 years, the ages will be (4x + 9) and (3x + 9). According to the given condition:
(4x + 9) / (3x + 9) = 7/6
Cross-multiply: 6(4x + 9) = 7(3x + 9)
24x + 54 = 21x + 63
24x - 21x = 63 - 54
3x = 9
x = 3
Present ages are 4x = 12 and 3x = 9, so the difference in their present ages = 12 - 9 = 3 years.
