Question

Ram and Naresh can complete a work together in 20 days and Naresh and Shyam together in 15 days. All three together can complete the work in 12 days. In how many days can Ram and Shyam together complete the work?

The correct answer is

20

Let the rate of work of Ram be R, Naresh be N, and Shyam be S. R + N = 1/20 (work per day) N + S = 1/15 R + N + S = 1/12 Substituting (R + N) in the third equation: 1/20 + S = 1/12 S = 1/12 - 1/20 = (5 - 3)/60 = 2/60 = 1/30 Now, substitute (N + S) in the third equation: R + 1/15 = 1/12 R = 1/12 - 1/15 = (5 - 4)/60 = 1/60 Ram and Shyam together: R + S = 1/60 + 1/30 = (1 + 2)/60 = 3/60 = 1/20 Therefore, Ram and Shyam together will complete the work in 20 days.
