Operating System as System Software

An operating system (OS) is fundamental software that manages a computer's hardware and software resources. It acts as an intermediary between the computer hardware and the user or application programs.

Understanding Software Types

Computer software is broadly categorized into two main types:

• System Software: This type of software controls and supports the operations of a computer system itself. It is designed to manage hardware resources and provide a platform for running application software. Examples include operating systems (like Windows, macOS, Linux), device drivers, and utility programs.
• Application Software: This software is designed to perform specific tasks for the end-user. Examples include word processors, web browsers, spreadsheets, and games.

Classifying the Operating System

An operating system's primary role is to manage hardware (CPU, memory, storage) and provide essential services for other software to run. It does not perform a specific task for the user directly, like editing a document or browsing the web. Instead, it enables these tasks by managing the underlying system resources.

Therefore, based on its function of managing the computer system and providing a platform, the operating system is classified as System software.
