National Science Day is observed in India every year on 28 February. It was first celebrated in 1987 on the proposal of the National Council for Science and Technology Communication.
On 28 February 1928, Sir C.V. Raman announced the discovery that light scattered by a transparent medium partly changes its wavelength. This came to be called the Raman Effect, and it won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, the first Nobel in science for an Asian.
The photoelectric effect was explained by Albert Einstein, the Doppler effect by Christian Doppler and the Hall effect by Edwin Hall; none of these is the basis of India's National Science Day.
