Understanding Land Use Categories in India's Land Revenue Records

Land use refers to how land is utilized by humans. In India, systematic records are maintained by the Land Revenue Department to track and classify different types of land use. These records are crucial for various purposes, including planning, administration, and resource management.

The land use categories maintained in India's Land Revenue Records provide a comprehensive picture of how land is distributed and utilized across the country. These categories are standardized to ensure uniformity in reporting and analysis.

Classification of Land Use in Land Revenue Records

According to the data maintained in the Land Revenue Records of India, land use is categorized into a specific number of distinct classes. This classification system helps in monitoring changes in land use patterns over time and understanding the availability of land for different activities.

The land use categories used in these records are divided into 9 principal types. These categories cover various forms of land cover and human activity on the land.

The 9 Categories of Land Use

Here are the nine categories into which land use is classified in India's Land Revenue Records:

  1. Forest Area: Land recorded as forest under legal enactment or administered as forest, whether state-owned or private. It includes all actually forested area or not.
  2. Area under Non-agricultural Uses: Land occupied by buildings, roads, railways, industries, shops, etc., and other land used for non-agricultural purposes.
  3. Barren and Unculturable Land: Land which cannot be brought under cultivation except at high cost. This includes mountains, deserts, etc.
  4. Permanent Pastures and Grazing Lands: Land used for grazing by cattle and other livestock. This includes village common grazing lands.
  5. Area under Miscellaneous Tree Crops, Groves not included in Net Sown Area: Cultivable land which is not included in 'Net sown area' but is put to some agricultural use, such as orchards and tree crops like coconut, mango, etc.
  6. Culturable Waste-land: Land which is available for cultivation, but not taken up for cultivation or taken up once but not cultivated during the last five years or more.
  7. Fallow Lands other than Current Fallows: Land which was taken up for cultivation but is temporarily out of cultivation for a period of not less than one year and not more than five years.
  8. Current Fallows: Land which is left without cultivation for one agricultural year.
  9. Net Sown Area: Area sown with crops and orchards. This area is counted only once even if a crop is sown more than once in that year.

Importance of Land Use Classification

This detailed classification is essential for:

  • Agricultural planning and policy formulation.
  • Monitoring forest cover changes.
  • Urban and rural development planning.
  • Assessing available land for different uses.
  • Managing land resources sustainably.

Additional Information: Land Use Data Sources

While Land Revenue Records provide a traditional source for land use data, other methods like remote sensing and satellite imagery are increasingly used for more accurate and detailed land use mapping. Institutions like the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) play a crucial role in this. However, the administrative classification used in Land Revenue Records is a fundamental system for understanding land use patterns in India at the local and regional levels. The 9 categories described are standard for these records.
