Lala Lajpat Rai's Protest Death: Simon Commission

Lala Lajpat Rai, a prominent leader of the Indian independence movement, died as a result of injuries sustained during a protest against a specific British government decision.

Background of the Protest

The British government appointed the Indian Statutory Commission, commonly known as the Simon Commission, in 1927. Its purpose was to review the working of the Government of India Act, 1919, and suggest constitutional reforms.

  • The Commission consisted of seven members, all of whom were British.
  • There were no Indian members in the Commission, which led to widespread opposition across India.
  • Indian political groups felt it was an insult and boycotted the Commission.

Lala Lajpat Rai's Role and Demise

Lala Lajpat Rai was actively involved in the protests against the Simon Commission. He led a silent protest march when the Commission visited Lahore in October 1928.

  • During the protest, the police, led by Superintendent James A. Scott, ordered a lathi (baton) charge on the demonstrators.
  • Lala Lajpat Rai was severely beaten and injured during this charge.
  • He succumbed to his injuries approximately 17 days later, on November 17, 1928.

Therefore, Lala Lajpat Rai died protesting the Simon Commission.
