Baffle Function in Agitated Vessels

In agitated vessels, the primary purpose of installing baffles is to disrupt the swirling motion (vortex) created by the impeller.

Baffles are typically vertical plates installed on the vessel walls. They are strategically placed to:

• Prevent the formation of a large vortex in the center, which reduces the effective mixing volume.
• Promote turbulence and radial flow, ensuring that the entire contents of the vessel are mixed more uniformly and efficiently.
• Enhance the overall mixing performance by forcing the fluid to flow axially (up and down) as well as radially.

While improved mixing can indirectly lead to effects like better heat transfer (Option D) or influence bubble dynamics (Option A), and efficient mixing design can aim for lower power consumption (Option C), the fundamental and main reason for incorporating baffles is Better Mixing.

Therefore, baffles are essential components designed mainly to achieve superior mixing efficiency within the agitated vessel.
