Question

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below.

At one time, in the history of India, most women knew very well how to bring up their infants and they lived a perfectly healthy life, free from diseases. The overall standard of women and children in the country was much better than those of other civilizations of that period. But ever since India was exposed to invasions by foreign nations, life became unsafe and the property was unprotected, and people were forced to congregate in towns in such a compact way that led to awful insanitation and diseases. The traditional knowledge of domestic and personal health and hygiene was ignored. Women were confined indoors for fear of insults and a train of social and unhealthy dangers followed. It is a problem now, how we can restore the original conditions of a healthy and happy life in India. This is a socio-economic problem which needs to be given priority to bring back the original culture and restore the welfare of women and children in India.

The correct answer is

Exposure to frequent foreign invasions

Understanding Why Life Became Unsafe in India

The provided passage discusses the historical changes in the condition of women and children in India. It contrasts a past period of good health and well-being with a later period where conditions deteriorated.

The passage explicitly states the reason for this decline:

  • "But ever since India was exposed to invasions by foreign nations, life became unsafe and the property was unprotected..."

This sentence directly links the onset of unsafe living conditions and the lack of property protection to the period when India faced invasions from foreign countries.

Analyzing the Options

Let's look at why the other options are not the primary cause mentioned in the passage for life becoming unsafe and property unprotected:

  • Option 1: Because of awful insanitation and diseases
Insanitation and diseases are mentioned as consequences of people congregating in towns due to the unsafe conditions, not the initial cause of the unsafety itself.
  • Option 2: Because women were confined indoors
The confinement of women indoors is presented as a consequence of the unsafe environment created by foreign invasions, aimed at protecting them from insults and dangers.
  • Option 4: People were forced to congregate in towns
Forcing people to congregate in towns was a result of the unsafe conditions caused by invasions, which then led to other problems like insanitation.
  • Option 3: Exposure to frequent foreign invasions
This option directly matches the statement in the passage that explains the turning point when life became unsafe and property unprotected.

Therefore, the main reason life became unsafe and property unprotected, according to the passage, was the exposure to invasions by foreign nations.
