Geostrophic winds are the result of the balance between

The correct answer is
coriolis force and pressure gradient force

Geostrophic Wind Force Balance

Geostrophic winds describe a theoretical condition where the atmosphere is in motion, moving parallel to lines of constant pressure (isobars). This ideal state occurs primarily in the upper atmosphere where frictional effects are negligible.

Key Forces Involved

The geostrophic wind is established by the equilibrium between two primary forces:

  • Pressure Gradient Force (PGF): This force arises from differences in atmospheric pressure. It directs air movement from an area of higher pressure towards an area of lower pressure. The stronger the pressure difference over a given distance, the stronger the PGF.
  • Coriolis Force: This is an apparent force caused by the Earth's rotation. It deflects moving objects (like air) to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. The magnitude of the Coriolis force depends on the speed of the moving air and the latitude.

The Balance

In the geostrophic balance, the air accelerates due to the pressure gradient force. As the air gains speed, the Coriolis force increases its deflection. Eventually, the geostrophic wind is reached when the deflection caused by the Coriolis force exactly counteracts the push from the pressure gradient force. At this point, the net force is zero, and the wind flows parallel to the isobars at a constant speed.

Other forces like friction are significant near the Earth's surface, modifying wind speed and direction, and are therefore excluded from the ideal geostrophic model. Centrifugal force becomes relevant in curved airflow (gradient wind), not the straight-line flow assumed in basic geostrophic balance.
