During the laparoscopy, Dr. Mansi's team discovered a tumor in Lata's uterus. A closer examination suggested that the tumor could be malignant.

Dr. Mansi removed Lata's uterus after receiving Sujatha's consent in writing. Lata was informed of this the next day. She was very upset and felt betrayed as she had not consented to the removal of her uterus.
Lata complained to the police who tried to convince her that Dr. Mansi had acted with good intention to help a patient. Sujatha was of the same opinion, however Lata was not convinced and decided to approach the court.
Discuss the moral conduct of the doctor in this situation.
Dr. Mansi's intent was good but her conduct was ethically flawed:
- The tumour was suspected malignant, not confirmed — biopsy was the standard, reversible first step.
- No emergency existed requiring immediate irreversible action; the patient could have been closed, revived, informed and reconsented.
- Convenience (avoiding a second surgery) does not override autonomy.
- She should have obtained deferred informed consent from Lata herself.
Verdict: Well-intentioned paternalism, but ethically and legally indefensible. Medical Council of India's Code of Ethics Regulation 7.16 explicitly requires consent for such procedures. Lata's court recourse is legitimate; the case must reform hospital consent protocols.
