Understanding Primary Economic Activities Chronology

The question asks us to arrange different primary economic activities based on their historical appearance in human development. Primary activities are those directly involving the extraction or collection of resources from the Earth.

Let's consider the activities listed and their likely sequence:

  • Hunting and Gathering (C): This is the oldest known economic activity, practiced by early humans. People survived by collecting edible plants and hunting animals. This required constant movement to find resources.
  • Nomadic Herding (A): As humans began domesticating animals, nomadic herding emerged. This involved moving herds of animals from place to place in search of pasture and water. It's an early form of using domesticated resources, following hunting and gathering.
  • Primitive Subsistence Agriculture (B): This marks a significant shift towards settled life (though sometimes semi-nomadic initially). It involved cultivating crops using basic tools and techniques, often like slash-and-burn agriculture. This activity developed after humans had some understanding of plants and potentially animal assistance.
  • Intensive Subsistence Agriculture (D): This is a more advanced form of agriculture compared to primitive subsistence. It involves using more labor, fertilizers, and sometimes irrigation on smaller plots of land to maximize yield. This typically developed later than primitive forms as populations grew and technology advanced.

Based on this historical progression, the chronological order of these primary activities is generally considered to be:

  1. Hunting and Gathering (C)
  2. Nomadic Herding (A)
  3. Primitive Subsistence Agriculture (B)
  4. Intensive Subsistence Agriculture (D)

Thus, the correct sequence is (C), (A), (B), (D).

Revision Table: Primary Activities Chronology

Activity Code Key Characteristics Historical Placement
Hunting and Gathering (C) Collecting wild plants, hunting animals, nomadic lifestyle. Earliest form of human economy.
Nomadic Herding (A) Raising domesticated animals, moving with herds for pasture. Followed hunting/gathering, early domestication.
Primitive Subsistence Agriculture (B) Basic cultivation techniques (e.g., slash-and-burn), low yield, often for own consumption. Emergence of settled agriculture.
Intensive Subsistence Agriculture (D) High labor input per unit area, high yield per unit area, use of fertilizers/irrigation, for own consumption primarily. More advanced agricultural stage.

Additional Information on Economic Activity Evolution

Human economic history shows a clear progression from simple resource extraction to more complex production and service industries. The categories discussed here are primary activities. Other categories include:

  • Secondary Activities: Processing raw materials into finished goods (manufacturing, construction).
  • Tertiary Activities: Providing services (trade, transport, education, healthcare).
  • Quaternary Activities: Information-based services (research, development, IT).
  • Quinary Activities: High-level decision-making roles (government, top management).

The shift from predominantly primary activities to secondary, tertiary, and beyond is characteristic of economic development and modernization in societies.

  4. Which of the following Geographers has emphasized on ‘synthesis study of relationship between human societies and earth’s surface’ while defining Human Geography?

  5. Direction for the question 41 to 45: Read the following passage and answer the question:

Nomadic herding or pastoral nomadism is a primitive subsistence activity, in which the herders rely on animals for food, clothing, shelter, tools and transport. They move from one place to another along with their livestock, depending on the amount and quality of pastures and water. Each nomadic community occupies a well-identified territory as a matter of tradition.

A wide variety of animals is kept in different regions. In tropical Africa, cattle are the most important livestock, while in Sahara and Asiatic deserts, sheeps, goats and camel are reared. In the mountainous areas of Tibet and Andes, Yak and llamas and in the Arctic and sub-Artic areas, reindeer are the most important animals.

Pastoral nomadism is associated with three important regions. The core region extends from the Atlantic shores of North Africa eastwards across the Arabian Peninsula into Mongolia and Central China. The second region extends over the Tundra region of Eurasia. In the southern hemisphere there are small areas in south-West Africa and on the islands of Madagascar.

Movement in search of pastures is undertaken either over vast horizontal distances or vertically from one elevation to another in the mountainous regions. The process of migration from plain areas to pastures on mountain during Summer and again from Mountain pastures to plain areas during winters is known as Transhumance. In mountain regions such as Himalayas, Gujjars, Bakarwals, Gaddis and Bhotiyas migrate from plains to the mountains in summers and to the plains from the high-altitude pastures in winters.

Similarly, in the Tundra regions, the nomadic herders move from south to north in summers and from north to south in winters.

The number of pastoral nomads has been decreasing and the areas operated by them shrinking. This is due to: (a) imposition of political boundaries, (b) new settlement plans by different countries.

The number of pastoral nomads have been decreasing and operated area shrinking due to?
