Question

A designer is developing an 8051-based embedded system that requires storage of a large amount of frequently changing data exceeding the internal RAM capacity, while keeping the program code unchanged. Which memory configuration is most suitable?

The correct answer is

Code in ROM, data in external RAM

The 8051 follows the Harvard architecture with separate program (code) memory and data memory. It has only 128 bytes of internal RAM (256 bytes in the 8052) but can address up to 64 KB of external data RAM through the DPTR and MOVX instructions.

The program code does not change, so it is best kept in non-volatile ROM/Flash (internal or external code memory), which retains it without power.

The data is large and changes often, so it needs writable memory larger than the internal RAM — external RAM is the natural choice.

The other configurations fail: keeping data in internal RAM does not meet the capacity requirement; ROM cannot store frequently changing data because it is not written at run time; and placing code in RAM makes it volatile and wastes the data space needed.

Hence, the answer is Code in ROM, data in external RAM.
