A boy running at 10/9 th of his actual speed covers 39 km in 2 hours 20 minutes 24 seconds. Find the actual speed of the boy (approx).

The correct answer is

15 km/hr

Given:

Distance = 39 km
Time = 2 hours 20 minutes 24 seconds

Convert time into hours:

20 minutes = 20/60 = 1/3 hour
24 seconds = 24/3600 = 1/150 hour

Total time:

= 2 + 1/3 + 1/150
= (300 + 50 + 1)/150
= 351/150 hours
= 2.34 hours

New speed:

Speed = Distance ÷ Time

= 39 ÷ 2.34
= 50/3 km/h

Given:

New speed = (10/9) × Actual speed

So,

50/3 = (10/9) × Actual speed

Actual speed = (50/3) × (9/10)

= (50 ÷ 10) × (9 ÷ 3)

= 5 × 3

= 15 km/h

Answer: 15 km/h
