Question

8 persons A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H are sitting around a circular table facing the centre (not necessarily in the same order). F is to the immediate left of C and is adjacent to A. H is to the immediate right of D. Only three persons are sitting between B and H. B is to immediate left of E and E is not adjacent to C.

The correct answer is
G

Initial Seating Arrangement Deduction

We determine the initial seating arrangement based on the given clues:

  • Clue 1 & 2: F is left of C, and F is adjacent to A. Given they face the center, "left of C" means the order is F, C clockwise. Since F is adjacent to A, the block is either A-F-C or F-C-A. With F left of C, we have the sequence F, C clockwise. A must be adjacent to F.
  • Clue 3: H is to the immediate right of D. This implies the sequence (D, H) clockwise.
  • Clue 4: Three persons sit between B and H. In an 8-person circle, this means B and H are seated opposite each other.
  • Clue 5: B is to the immediate left of E. This implies the sequence (B, E) clockwise.
  • Clue 6: E is not adjacent to C.

Let's place B at Seat 1. From Clue 4, H must be opposite B at Seat 5.

  • From Clue 5 (B, E clockwise), E must be at Seat 2.
  • From Clue 3 (D, H clockwise), D must be at Seat 4.

The partial arrangement is: B (Seat 1), E (Seat 2), ? (Seat 3), D (Seat 4), H (Seat 5), ? (Seat 6), ? (Seat 7), ? (Seat 8).

The remaining people are A, F, G. The remaining seats are 3, 6, 7, 8.

We need to place A, F, C using the sequences (F, C) clockwise and A adjacent to F.

  • Consider placing F at Seat 7 and C at Seat 8. This satisfies (F, C) clockwise.
  • A must be adjacent to F (at Seat 6 or Seat 8). Seat 8 is occupied by C. Therefore, A must be at Seat 6.
  • The remaining person, G, takes the last available seat, Seat 3.

The final initial clockwise arrangement is: B, E, G, D, H, A, F, C.

Seat Person (Clockwise)
1 B
2 E
3 G
4 D
5 H
6 A
7 F
8 C

Opposite Pairs and Positional Interchange

The pairs sitting opposite each other are determined from the initial arrangement:

Seat 1 Seat 2 Seat 3 Seat 4 Seat 5 Seat 6 Seat 7 Seat 8
B E G D H A F C
Opposite Pairs: (B, H), (E, A), (G, F), (D, C)

Each person interchanges their position with the person seated opposite them.

  • B (Seat 1) moves to H's original seat (Seat 5).
  • H (Seat 5) moves to B's original seat (Seat 1).
  • E (Seat 2) moves to A's original seat (Seat 6).
  • A (Seat 6) moves to E's original seat (Seat 2).
  • G (Seat 3) moves to F's original seat (Seat 7).
  • F (Seat 7) moves to G's original seat (Seat 3).
  • D (Seat 4) moves to C's original seat (Seat 8).
  • C (Seat 8) moves to D's original seat (Seat 4).

The new arrangement of people in the seats (1 to 8 clockwise) is:

Seat Person (Clockwise)
1 H
2 A
3 F
4 C
5 B
6 E
7 G
8 D

Locating E's Neighbor After Interchange

In the new seating arrangement, E is located at Seat 6.

The person seated to the immediate right of E (in the clockwise direction) is in Seat 7.

Observing the new arrangement, the person in Seat 7 is G.
