HPPSC Exam Pattern specifies its three stages of the selection process, types of questions, duration, mode of the exam, and the subjects included. This structural breakdown helps candidates make strategies accordingly. Prelims is objective and has two papers of 100 marks, each to be covered in 2 hours. Mains has 8 papers, 2 of them language papers, and they are qualifying in nature. The remaining 6 papers' marks are added to make the final merit lists. An interview evaluates a candidate’s personality, communication skills, decision-making ability, and suitability for administrative roles.
HPPSC Selection Process 2026
HPPSC selection process involves three stages:
- Prelims: An objective-type screening test.
- Mains: A Descriptive-type test where marks are carried forward to the final merit.
- Interview: A vice-voice test for Mains qualified candidates.
HPPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2026
This stage is a screening test for the Mains exam. This means that marks obtained in Prelims will not be counted for the Mains exam. However, marks obtained in Paper 1 are used to shortlist candidates for the Mains exam.

- Minimum Qualifying Marks: Candidates must secure at least 33% in Paper 2 to have Paper 1 evaluated for merit.
HPPSC Mains Exam Pattern 2026
This stage has six papers, out of which two language papers, English & Hindi, are qualifying in nature. However, candidates must clear these language papers so that other Mains papers can be evaluated. Marks obtained in the remaining six papers are counted for deciding the final merit. All Mains papers are descriptive in nature.

HPPSC Interview Exam Pattern 2026
HPPSC Interview is a personality test for candidates. This stage assesses candidates overall personality, mental alertness, communication skills, leadership qualities, and suitability for administrative roles.

The choice of an optional subject in HPPSC Main exam must be specified clearly by candidates while filling out the application form. Candidates are permitted to make changes only before the last date for fee payment, as notified by the Commission. They have the flexibility to write their optional paper in either English or Hindi. They should choose their Optional Subject depending on their academic background, interest, and scoring potential.
