Two Indian Scientists, Roxy Mathew Koll and Neelima Satyam, Win AGU 2026 Awards

Indian researchers Roxy Mathew Koll and Neelima Satyam have been chosen for the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2026 awards for their work in Earth and space sciences. Koll, a climate researcher at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, won the Pavel S. Molchanov Climate Communications Prize. Satyam, a professor at IIT Indore, was chosen for the Devendra Lal Memorial Medal.

The prize recognises his achievements in climate communication and in the study of climate change in the Indian Ocean and its impacts on South Asia. His research covers Indian Ocean warming, monsoon changes, marine heat waves, cyclones, extreme rainfall and their impacts on societies.

The prize carries a cash award of USD 25,000, an engraved plaque and an official citation. It is given every year to recognise excellence in climate communications, especially climate change research.

Neelima Satyam

Dr. Neelima Satyam's research interests include geotechnical engineering, seismic hazards, geohazard mitigation and resilient infrastructures, as well as earthquakes, landslides, rockfalls and slope instabilities.

The Devendra Lal Memorial Medal is given to a young or mid-career scientist for exceptional contribution to Earth and/or space sciences. Satyam will receive a medal and life membership of AGU.

The American Geophysical Union is an international scientific organisation specialising in Earth and space sciences, including climate sciences, geophysics, atmospheric sciences, oceanography, natural hazards and planetary sciences. It has announced 43 awards for 2026, to be presented at the AGU Annual Meeting in San Francisco in December 2026.
