The Orange Oakleaf (Kallima inachus) has been selected as Chhattisgarh's first state butterfly through an online vote held from 31 July to 31 August 2026. It received 3,000 of the 5,813 votes recorded. The species was chosen for its ability to blend into its surroundings: with its wings folded, it looks like a dry leaf. The proposal was finalised at the 15th State Wildlife Board meeting.
Characteristics of the Orange Oakleaf
With its wings closed, the butterfly resembles a dull, dried leaf, making it hard to spot and helping it avoid predators. When the wings open, they show a bright orange colour along with black and deep blue features.
Poll Results
The poll was conducted online through a Google Form. Three butterfly species were shortlisted by the authorities.
- Orange Oakleaf (Kallima inachus): 3,000 votes
- Common Banded Peacock (Papilio crino): 1,606 votes
- Spot Swordtail (Graphium nomius): 1,207 votes
The Orange Oakleaf took about 51.6% of all votes. The wildlife board approved the choice at its 15th meeting, and the decision now awaits government clearance.
Butterfly Diversity
A 2025 state biodiversity study reported 201 butterfly species native to Chhattisgarh. An estimated 1,500 butterfly species are found in India. Butterflies help in pollination and can serve as indicators of the environment, so protecting their habitats also protects native vegetation and other species.
Other State Butterflies
Several states already have a state butterfly, including Maharashtra (Blue Mormon), Karnataka (Southern Birdwing), Kerala (Malabar Banded Peacock), Tamil Nadu (Tamil Yeoman), Goa (Malabar Tree Nymph), Uttarakhand (Common Peacock), Arunachal Pradesh (Kaiser-i-Hind) and Madhya Pradesh (Orange Oakleaf). Chandigarh has the Striped Tiger. Maharashtra started the initiative by adopting the Blue Mormon in 2015.
