When Is Janmashtami 2026?

The main Janmashtami observance falls on September 4, 2026. As per Panchang calculations, Krishna Paksha Ashtami Tithi begins at about 2:25 AM on September 4 and ends at 12:13 AM on September 5. Rohini Nakshatra, an important part of the festival, is present for most of September 4. These dates are the reason September 5 also appears on the Janmashtami calendar — the main date of Janmashtami is September 4, but Lord Krishna's birthday takes place at midnight.

Janmashtami 2026 Nishita Kaal and Puja Muhurat

The most important puja of Janmashtami is performed during Nishita Kaal, which is generally the midnight hour when Krishna was born. The exact Nishita Puja Muhurat for New Delhi will be around 11:57 PM on September 4 to 12:43 AM on September 5; however, the exact timing depends on the location, so one should refer to the local Panchang before performing the ritual. During the midnight puja, devotees perform bathing and dressing of the Krishna deity, bhog offering, aarti and the singing of devotional songs.

Janmashtami 2026 Fasting and Parana

Devotees often observe a fast during Janmashtami and perform the core worship at midnight. Fasting customs can differ depending on family traditions and sampradaya. Parana time, the time for breaking the fast, also depends on calculations from the corresponding Panchang. For New Delhi, as per Drik Panchang, devotees can break the fast after 6:01 AM on September 5, as long as the necessary tithi and nakshatra period have elapsed.
