Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) floated off INS Srishti (Yard 1283), a Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) for the Indian Navy, on October 27, 2026 at its Vaddem Yard in Goa. The ceremony marks a major construction milestone as India continues to build up its capability to make naval ships indigenously.

About INS Srishti

INS Srishti is being built by Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Navy and its yard number is 1283. It is one of several ships India is building domestically for the Navy.

Floating off is a key stage in shipbuilding, but it does not make the vessel operational, as much work remains afterwards.

Role of Offshore Patrol Vessels

Offshore patrol vessels are designed for long-duration patrol and monitoring in offshore and coastal waters. Their roles include:

  • Maritime surveillance
  • Safeguarding offshore assets
  • Anti-piracy missions
  • Search and rescue
  • Humanitarian assistance

Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Building naval ships in Indian shipyards fits the wider push for defence indigenisation.

  • Defence manufacturing: builds the country's industrial and technological capability.
  • Reduced dependence: lowers reliance on external sources for selected ships, components and services.
  • Industrial growth: creates demand for engineering, manufacturing and technical services.
  • Maritime security: a stronger indigenous fleet supports surveillance and security.
