Grain Drying Strategy Explained

Grains are dried before storage primarily to reduce their moisture content. High moisture levels create an environment suitable for mold growth, insect activity, and germination, all of which lead to spoilage.

The process involves two stages:

• Sunlight Drying (Initial Stage): Exposing grains to direct sunlight helps to quickly reduce the bulk of the moisture. This is an efficient way to start the drying process.
• Shade Drying (Final Stage): After initial drying in the sun, grains are moved to the shade. This slower, more controlled drying prevents the grains from becoming too brittle or cracking, which can happen with rapid drying. It allows the remaining internal moisture to evaporate evenly and reduces the risk of surface hardening that traps moisture inside.

This combined approach ensures the grains reach a safe, low moisture content throughout, which is crucial for long-term storage and effectively prevents spoilage.
