A social audit is a process where the citizens (primarily beneficiaries and villagers) examine the work and records of the MGNREGA scheme at the grassroots level.

Gram Sabha's Role in Social Audit

Under MGNREGA, the Gram Sabha holds the primary responsibility for conducting the Social Audit. This is a key function mandated by the Act.

• The Gram Sabha is the village assembly consisting of all registered voters in the village.
• It is empowered to scrutinize records, examine the quality of works undertaken, and investigate potential irregularities or corruption.
• Regular meetings of the Gram Sabha are essential for discussing social audit reports and taking necessary actions.
• This ensures direct participation of the community in monitoring the scheme's execution, making the process people-centric.

While other bodies like the Panchayat Pradhan, B.D.O., or District Magistrate have administrative or oversight roles, the direct responsibility for initiating, organizing, and conducting the social audit rests with the Gram Sabha.
