Understanding Mughal Central Administration

The Mughal Empire had a well-organized central administration system. Several key officials played important roles under the Emperor.

Some of the most prominent positions in the central administration included:

• Wakil or Vazir: Initially, the Wakil was the most powerful minister, acting as the Emperor's deputy. Over time, their power varied, sometimes becoming more ceremonial.
• Diwan (or Diwan-i-Ala): This minister was in charge of finance and revenue. The Diwan managed the income and expenditure of the empire, making it a crucial role.
• Mir Bakshi: The Mir Bakshi was the head of the military department. This position was responsible for military appointments, promotions, intelligence gathering, and presenting candidates for military service to the Emperor. They maintained the Mansabdari system records.
• Sadr-us-Sudur: This minister was responsible for religious affairs and charitable grants.
• Mir Saman: This official managed the imperial household, including workshops (karkhanas), stores, and other supplies.

Importance of the Mir Bakshi in Mughal Administration

While all these positions were significant, the importance of the Mir Bakshi in the central administration grew considerably. The Mir Bakshi was not just the paymaster general of the army but held a crucial role in managing the military structure and personnel, which was the backbone of the Mughal Empire's power.

The Mir Bakshi's duties involved:

• Maintaining the Mansabdar records, detailing the rank, salary, and military obligations of nobles and officers.
• Presenting all candidates for military appointments to the Emperor.
• Preparing campaigns and managing troop movements.
• Gathering intelligence about the army and the provinces.

Given the empire's reliance on a strong military and the Mir Bakshi's direct involvement in its management, this position held substantial influence and authority, making it a highly important role among the ministers in the central administration.
