Hydrolysis of calcium carbide

The electrolytic process splits water into hydrogen and oxygen gas by passing an electric current through it, so it is a genuine industrial method of producing hydrogen.

In the water gas-steam process, steam is passed over red-hot coke to give water gas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen), which is a recognised commercial route to hydrogen.

Liquefaction and fractional distillation of coal gas is used to separate its hydrogen-rich fraction, so it too is a valid hydrogen-production method.

Hydrolysis of calcium carbide with water instead produces acetylene (C2H2) gas and calcium hydroxide, not hydrogen — this reaction is the standard method for generating acetylene, not hydrogen.

Hence, hydrolysis of calcium carbide is the process that is not used for producing hydrogen gas.
