Force Roles and Ministry Control
Different security forces in India report to different ministries based on their primary role and operational domain.
- Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP): This force primarily guards the India-China border. It functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
- Rashtriya Rifles (RR): This is a counter-insurgency force and an important part of the Indian Army. As part of the Army, it falls directly under the control of the Ministry of Defence.
- National Security Guard (NSG): Often referred to as the 'Black Cats', the NSG is a specialized counter-terrorism unit. It operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB): This force guards India's borders with Nepal and Bhutan. It is also managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Based on these operational controls, the Rashtriya Rifles is the organization under the Ministry of Defence.
