Identifying Biological Tissues

A tissue is a level of organization in multicellular organisms, consisting of a group of similar cells and their extracellular matrix that perform a specific function. Let's examine the options:

• Nerves: Composed of specialized cells (neurons) and glial cells, nerves form nervous tissue, responsible for transmitting signals.
• Blood: Considered a specialized connective tissue, blood consists of plasma (the matrix) and various cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets).
• Muscles: Muscle tissue is made up of cells that contract, enabling movement. There are three types: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle.
• Red blood cells: These are individual cells (erythrocytes) responsible for oxygen transport. While they are components of blood tissue, they are single cells, not a collection of cells forming a tissue.

Why Red Blood Cells Are Not a Tissue

The key distinction lies in the definition of a tissue. A tissue is an assembly of multiple cells working together. Red blood cells are individual cellular units. Although they are vital components of the blood tissue, they do not form a tissue on their own.
