Which one of the following effects best explains the high partial pressure of carbon dioxide causing haemoglobin to release oxygen in actively respiring tissues?

UPSC CAPF 2026 General Ability and Intelligence Question Paper (19-Jul-2026)
The correct answer is

Bohr effect

The Haldane effect describes the reverse process — how oxygenation of haemoglobin in the lungs promotes release of carbon dioxide — and is not the answer here. The Allee effect is an ecological concept relating population density to individual fitness, unrelated to blood gas physiology. There is no standard physiological "Eagle effect" concerning oxygen transport.

The Bohr effect describes how a rise in carbon dioxide partial pressure (and the accompanying fall in pH) in actively respiring tissues lowers haemoglobin's affinity for oxygen, causing it to release bound oxygen more readily where it is needed most.

Hence, the answer is Bohr effect.
